Have you ever heard about lyme disease? Maybe not, but you’re surely aware of how dangerous ticks can be.
Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, which is transmitted to humans by a bite from an infected black-legged or deer tick. The tick becomes infected after feeding on infected deer or mice.
A tick has to be present on the skin for 24 to 48 hours to transmit the infection. Most people with lyme disease have no memory of a tick bite.
Early signs and symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes - all common in the flu. In up to 80% of Lyme infections, a rash is one of the first symptoms.
Without treatment, symptoms can progress. They might include: severe headache or neck stiffness, rashes on other areas of the body, arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling, particularly in the knees, loss of muscle tone or “drooping” on one or both sides of the face.
Lyme disease prevention mostly involves decreasing your risk of experiencing a tick bite. Take the following steps to prevent tick bites. First of all, wear long pants and long-sleeve shirts when in the outdoors. Also, make your yard unfriendly to ticks by clearing wooded areas, keeping underbrush to a minimum, and putting woodpiles in areas with lots of sun.
Be vigilant. Check your children, pets, and yourself for ticks. Don’t assume you can’t be infected again; people can get Lyme disease more than once.
